MBU rings in the Christmas Season with one of its beloved traditions — Hanging of the Green.

Missouri Baptist University’s cherished Christmas tradition, Hanging of the Green, resumes at 5 p.m. today, but this year faculty, staff and students will gather in the Quad instead of the usual location in the Mabee Great Hall.

For the 30th anniversary of this tradition the Student Activities Department at MBU has decided to make a few changes to the traditional Christmas festivities.

“I’m excited about this year’s Hanging of the Green. I’ve been every year while at MBU and it will be a nice change to have it in the Quad,” said Julie Beehler, a junior human services major.

Student activities will kick off the event at 4:30 p.m. in the Perk, where students, faculty and staff are invited to enjoy fresh cookies and cocoa to warm up before heading outside.

Promptly at 5 p.m. a student or faculty member from each department or team will hang a ribbon on the Christmas tree to represent their specific group.

“I have never been to this event but it sounds like a great idea. It’s a way to bring different campus groups together,” said Michael Asleson, a sophomore accounting major.

After the tree is adorned, MBU president Dr. R. Alton Lacey will be reading the Christmas story.

The night will conclude as the campus Christmas lights are lit for the season.

Activities will conclude by 5:30 p.m. sharp, allowing those who have night classes to enjoy time with fellow students and still make it to class on time.

“I am only on campus Tuesdays and Thursdays so this will be perfect timing for me. I don’t often participate in campus activities but this one sounds really neat,” said Randy Ricks, a senior criminal justice major.

Students, faculty and staff are looking forward to having an evening full of Christmas cheer.
